Gul Panag calls for social change to shatter taboo over menstruation in India

Bollywood actor Gul Panag joined a list of panelists in Mumbai to discuss one of the least talked about social topics in India - menstruation - with an aim to promote awareness and the need to educate young girls and women about menstrual hygiene. Panag said societal attitude must change in order to lift the taboo around menstruation in the country. The panel discussion was organised by Stayfree, a brand of feminine hygiene products, on the occasion of Menstrual Hygiene Day, which is observed May 28 every year. The other panelists also spoke about the low level of awareness among Indian women on the health issues and how menstrual taboos jeopardize their health. Doctor Anita Saini from Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital in Mumbai said the younger generation is, however, well informed. Another panelist at the discussion, counselor and menstrual hygiene educator Sinu Joseph spoke about the impact of cultural conflict on menstrual hygiene.
