Actress and filmmaker Revathi has always been part of sensitive subjects but the recently released Kalki Koechlin starrer MARGARITA WITH A STRAW, saw her in a much complicated and delicate role. She not only played a cerebral palsy-affected girl's (essayed by Kalki) mother but Revathi's character is also shown suffering from brain cancer in the film.

When asked about playing such a complicated role, she begged to differ, "My role was not complicated. It was simple, truthful and a natural role. The complication was in the script as it was highly sensitive and sensitively written. I just had to be there and understand. I did what they (makers) needed and it was really easy."

Revathi, who has been very selective about her work, enjoyed doing a film like MARGARITA. In fact she was waiting for such a role for a long time.

"I enjoyed playing a role like this after a long time which is very real and in every way good. I have been waiting for such role for a long time. Though it was nothing new for me, as in the past I did a film like ANJALI, where I had played the mother of a disabled child, it was refreshing to do this film. From that point onwards I have also been supporting an organization. I know so many parents who have children suffering from some disease. I have grown up on them," she says

Revathi further adds, "But the film MARGARITA WITH A STRAW is not about creating awareness or educating about the disability but the fact that even they have their rights, like everybody they have a life, and they also can experience same emotions. Kudos to Shonali Bose (the director) to bring such kind of film in the mainstream cinema! Shonali has made such a beautiful film that I wish I could have made it."

Though Revathi endorses such films, she doesn't want it to happen on everyday basis. According to her, MARGARITA WITH A STRAW type of films are rare.

"MARGARITA is a rare, selective type of film from a sensitive director like Shonali. You will not have more such films happening every now and then. And I don't even want it to happen on regular base...Such movies come once in a lifetime. These kinds of films are truthful and they should be cherished," says the actress, who has been around in the film industry for more than two decades.

Revathi is all praise for her on-screen daughter Kalki's caliber. "Kalki is a very committed actor, simple and looks girl next-door," she says

MARGARITA WITH A STRAW released all over on April 17 and has opened to mixed reviews.
