Yahoo News ‘The Other Woman’ Poised To End ‘Captain America's’ Box-Office Reign
The movie marketplace has been light on movies for women and comedies recently, and Fox's “The Other Woman” is both. That makes it a very good bet to knock “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” out of the top spot at the box office this weekend.
The revenge tale stars Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton as wronged women wreaking havoc on a three-timing spouse, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of TV's “Game of Thrones.” Taylor Kinney and Nicki Minaj co-star.
Fox is projecting an opening in the mid-to-high-teen millions for the comedy, directed by Nick Cassavetes (“My Sister's Keeper”). That should be enough to knock Disney's Marvel superhero sequel out of the No. 1 spot, which it has held for the past three weeks.
“The Other Woman” should also be able to hold off the weekend's other two wide openers: the Lionsgate horror film “The Quiet Ones” and the action film “Brick Mansions,” the latter of which stars the late Paul Walker. Both are expected to open below $10 million.

Sony's Christian drama “Heaven Is for Real” has shown surprising strength, and actually beat “Winter Soldier” for the top spot Tuesday, so it should be among the leaders. Fox's animated “Rio 2” could be a factor as well.
The primary target for “The Other Woman” is mature women, though the studio appealed to the ratings board of the Motion Picture Association of America to get a PG-13, so it's hoping to attract younger women as well.
“And as a matter of fact, we won't be turning men away,” kidded Spencer Klein, Senior Vice President, General Sales Manager at Fox. ”It's showing some strength with young females and we believe it's going to play well over the next few weeks, so we think the audience will eventually broaden to young women and men.”
That will hinge in part on word of mouth. The early reviews aren't good (39 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), so how the core audience responds will matter. They should be primed — there hasn't been a movie aimed squarely at women since “Tyler Perry's Single Moms Club” last month.
“The Other Woman” hasn't been strong on social media — not surprising, given the older target demo — but it was the top seller in terms of advance sales at online ticket broker Fandango on Wednesday. Fox will have it in a healthy 3,240 theaters.
Relativity Media is distributing “Brick Mansions,” an English-language reboot of the 2004 French movie “Banlieue 13,” which was produced by EuropaCorp and Transfilm International.

In addition to Walker, David Belle reprises his role from the original French film and hip-hop star RZA co-stars. The film marks the directing debut of Camille Delamarre, an editor whose credits include “Taken 2,” “Transporter 3” and “Colombiana.”
Luc Besson wrote the screenplay for the PG-13-rated “Brick Mansions,” which features Walker as an undercover cop who teams with an ex-con to stop a vicious drug lord to stop a plot to take over a dystopian Detroit.
The $28 million film was produced by Claude Leger and Jonathan Vanger. Tucker Tooley, Matt Alvarez, Romuald Drault, Ginette Guillard and Henri Deneubourg are executive producers.
Relativity will have it 2,642 theaters.

“The Quiet Ones” stars Jared Harris (TV's “Mad Men”) as a London college professor who, with a team of university students, conducts experiments on a young girl with a scary secret.
Sam Claifin (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”) and Olivia Cooke (TV's “Bates Motel”) co-star in the Hammer Films thriller, which is directed by John Pogue from a screenplay he wrote with Craig Rosenberg and Oren Moverman.
The target demographics are young women and Hispanic moviegoers, and Lionsgate is hoping it connects with teens and college students on spring break.
It's rated PG-13 and will be in 2,027 theaters.
