Yeng Constantino: Motherhood can wait after marriage

At 25, Yeng Constantino can afford to delay motherhood once she marries fellow-musician and worship director Victor "Yan" Asuncion in February next year. But that’s not the main reason why she doesn’t see herself becoming a mother soon after her non-showbiz garden wedding,

“Long term goal namin yon after two or three years (of marriage). Ang short-term goal namin is to travel three to four times a year abroad, sa hindi pa namin napupuntahan, para ma-enjoy namin ang isa’t isa,” Yeng said at the pictorial for her November 21 concert with Rico Blanco and Gloc-9 called ICON at the Araneta Coliseum.

Christian family

She also wants to write worship songs with Yan and help him save more souls via his work at the Victory Christian Church in Greenhills.

Yeng Constantino has adjusted to fiance Yan Asuncion's deliberate ways.

The baby is part of the long-term goal, along with moving in to a new house after five years “para doon lumaki ang anak namin.”

But Yeng knows she has to submit to a divine plan for her and Yan.

“Kapag mag-interrupt si God, okay lang.”

The would-be bride knows she will be happy with her new life because she’s joining a Christian family for whom dinners are fun, and marriage is a given. Yan’s mom bought her five sons diamond engagement rings of various styles to give their future brides.

Personalized wedding vows

“Bata pa sila, may concept na sila (about marriage), may linulook forward to na sila. Kapag nagkaanak kami ni Yan bibilhan ko din siya ng ring para maisip niya na ‘I will give this to someone in the future.'”

That’s why Yeng’s sixth album is full of heartfelt love songs she and Yan have composed out of their overflowing feelings for each other.

That’s also why she can’t wait to slip into her Albert Andrada wedding gown and deliver her personalized vow at the altar.

Non-showbiz entourage

“Kung kami (ni Yan) ang masusunod, gusto namin agad na (ang wedding). Pero ikakasal ang kapatid ng fiancé ko in 2014, so 2015 na lang ang sa amin.”

Yeng wants to make her gown her own by adding some embellishments.

“Next year, minimalist (ang trend). Medyo plain, pero gusto ko may lace, ganon.”

Her wedding entourage is non-showbiz because her inner circle stays away from the klieg lights. But Yeng is making sure her “ASAP” family is part of the guest list.

Hers and Yan’s singer-friends can perform a number or two at the after-wedding party, but the couple won’t expect them to. Yeng vows it will be an afternoon of just bonding with family and friends, away from the performance level kind of singing the bride is associated with.

“Marami ang nagsasabi na baka maingay ito, pero mas strings kami, piano. Sobrang iba at solemn lang talaga,” Yeng says.

Honeymoon in Maldives

The motif, in keeping with the love month when the wedding is set, is red, or different shades of the fiery hue.

Yeng is glad she and her fiancé attended an engagement seminar that guided them on what to expect from the relationship, the roles of the man and woman in marriage, etc.

“Ang galing! Ang dami kong natutunan!”

But hers – and Yan’s – best lessons about marriage are yet to come. They will learn more about it after they come home from their honeymoon in breathtaking Maldives.

Roller coaster ride

From the looks of it, Yeng and Yan are off to a good start. Yeng says she has adjusted to her fiancé’s deliberate ways while he understands her go-getter attitude.

It will be a long roller coaster ride for the future bride and groom. But Yeng – and Yan – are sure they will make it worth their while.
