Yahoo News Venice Film Festival Lands Al Pacino, Andrew Garfield, Ethan Hawke Films
David Gordon Green's “Manglehorn,” Andrew Niccol's “Good Kill,” Abel Ferrara's “Pasolini” and Joshua Oppenheimer's “The Look of Silence” will join Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's “Birdman” in the competition lineup of the 71st Venice International Film Festival (the Venice Biennale), Venice organizers announced at a press conference in Rome on Thursday.
Stars who could make the trek to the Italian festival include Al Pacino, who stars in “Manglehorn”; Andrew Garfield, Laura Dern and Michael Shannon, in Ramin Bahrani's “99 Homes”; Ethan Hawke, who appears in both “Good Kill” and Michael Amereyda's “Cymbeline,” the latter with Ed Harris and Milla Jovovich; Willem Dafoe, who plays Pier Paolo Pasolini in Ferrara's film about the Italian director; Viggo Mortensen, who stars in David Oelhoffen's “Loin des Hommes”; Anton Yelchin, in Joe Dante's “Burying the Ex”; and Frances McDormand, who plays the title role in Lisa Cholodenko's upcoming HBO miniseries “Olive Kitteridge,” which will receive an out-of-competition showcase.

The competition lineup will also include a number of films by celebrated international auteurs, including Andrei Konchalovsky (” Roy Andersson (“A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence”), Fatih Akin (“The Cut”) and Xavier Beauvois (“La Rancon de la Gloire”).
Non-competitive slots have gone to Peter Bogdanovich's “She's Funny That Way,” Barry Levinson's “The Humbling,” Cholodenko's “Olive Kitteridge,” Dante's “Burying the Ex,” “Nymphomaniac Volume II (long version) Director's Cut” from Lars von Trier and “The Old Man of Belem” from 105-year-old Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira.
The Laika/Focus animated feature “The Boxtrolls” will also screen out of competition.
Venice previously announced that it will open with “Birdman,” and that it will include tributes to editor Thelma Schoonmaker and documentary director Frederick Wiseman.
Venice will be the first of the three back-to-back fall festivals, opening on August 27 and running through Sept. 6. The four-day Telluride Film Festival will begin two days later, on Aug. 29, while the Toronto International Film Festival, the longest and largest of the three, will open on Sept. 4.
A number of the Venice films, including “Manglehorn,” “Good Kill,” “The Humbling” and “Pasolini,” will go from that festival to Telluride, Toronto or both.
