Marcus Adoro: The surfer, the baker, the electronic album maker

For the better half of his career, Marcus Adoro has remained the shadowy one in the company of bruddahs in arms Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan and Buddy Zabala.

Except for the occasional (but always momentous) Eraserheads one-offs (gigs abroad under their own name, a surprise recording last year of two new songs produced by Esquire Magazine and given away with an issue that sold out, and an impromptu jam during the Esquire launch—but not under their name), Marcus remained largely off the grid.

And we mean that in the literal sense.

Retaining obscurity

He has chosen to live in La Union as a surfer dude, a self-published poet and the main man of underrated punk/metal renegades Markus Highway.

He has also become a baker. (More on that later.)

Except for his presence on social media (Twitter, a private Instagram account, a Facebook page called Marcus Surf House that would occasionally disappear and reappear randomly), he appeared to make the conscious effort at retaining his own obscurity.

But will that change in coming months with the release of “Electronicoups,” a solo musical project?

Based on a sampler on Soundcloud—and the track “ITOYC (I'm Taking over Your Computer” you can now download for free on BitTorrent, Marcus’s new work is a throwback to the early days of electronic rock.

Here's an early version of the track on SoundCloud:

There are lots of computer-generated squiggles and post-disco repetitive beats that are reminiscent of the tracks used for console gaming and no vocals.

The real and imagined

“I will sing over them in live performances. With proper lyrics, my songs will be exploring a philosophical concept that I am very much interested in,” he tells Yahoo Philippines in an online conversation.

The new album, he adds, consists of edited live performances. “Most of the songs are new and conceived in the Philippines. Some are inspired by other places that I either physically visited or imagined,” he explains.

Initially he wanted to call the album “Electronicoups: Early Works, Soundtrack for a Revolution,” but, he said, “that's too good for an album title.”

Online only

The new album will only be available online. “I finished mixing it last December. I have decided to skip the CD release so it will be available soon for 1$ on Bittorrent.com. There seems to be already a long line of music fans waiting for its release.”

His surfing compatriots are also waiting for his new bakery to open.

“I have been baking bread and I am proud to say I bake the best bread in La Union (province).”

The baker

Marcus relates that when he was younger, he read an interview where John Lennon talked about baking. That piqued his interest. He also remembers a fascination with a cool baker character in an Anthony Bourdain paperback.

“Last year, my manager and a chef started The Midnight Bakery, an online bakeshop of sorts. That was when I decided to bake my first loaf.”

And with no bakery to service the surf community in La Union where he owns a little piece of property, Marcus and his manager plan to open a brick-and-mortar one called Lau.
