Another music fest set to happen in February
This time, venue is in Manila
Is the Philippines shaping up to be the region’s new music festival capital?
A third music fest is set to happen this month, in addition to the Malasimbo Music Festival in Mindoro and the 7107 International Music Festival in Clark, Pampanga.
This time, the venue is in Manila.
Two concerts a week apart is happening on February 13 and February 20 featuring the cream of the crop of indie artists in Febfest 2014: Hostess Club Manila.
Febfest’s line-up of foreign acts includes The National, Mogwai, Warpaint and Youth Lagoon, playing live at the Metrotent Convention Center at Metrowalk Plaza, Meralco Avenue in Pasig City, Manila,
February 13: Mogwai and Warpaint
Post-rock band Mogwai has been championed by legendary DJ John Peel, who has discovered and introduced artists to the public such as The Smiths, White Stripes, Blur, Nirvana, U2 and The Sex Pistols. The Scottish quintet is known for their progressive songs such as “Auto-Rock” and “Hunted by a Freak.” The band was was formed in 1995 and their latest album, which came out just last January 20, is called “Rave Tapes.”
Warpaint is an all-girl American indie rock band who has had Red Hot Chili Peppers current guitarist Josh Klinghoffer play for them at one point. Their connection to the rock band doesn’t end their as their first EP “Exquisite Corpse” was mixed and mastered by former RHCP guitarist John Frusciante. Warpaint was hailed as BBC’s sound of 2011. Their dark, melodically complex songs make the February 13 line-up with Mogwai a great pairing. New songs “Biggy” and “Love is to Die” is out and will be part of their self-titled album “Warpaint.”
February 20: The National and Youth Lagoon
The National has been associated with US president Barack Obama when their song “Fake Empire” was used during his 2008 campaign. Vocalist Matt Berninger told Vice Magazine, however, that the song is actually about not thinking about politics. They’ve been involved in Obama’s campaigns ever since, playing in the midterm elections in 2010 and for his reelection in 2012. Their latest album “Trouble Will Find Me” was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album in this year’s Grammy Awards.
Youth Lagoon is Trevor Powers. He started being active in 2010 and has opened for The National early in 2013, which makes this second week line-up a winning deal. His dream pop pieces, grounded by raw Bob Dylan-esque jeering vocals, will be a great complement to The National’s deeper ensemble.
