Kate Durnell, 20, the only female Western Sydney fan heading to Saudi Arabia for final

20-year-old Kate Durnell will cheer on her beloved Western Sydney Wanderers this Saturday as the Australian side look to make AFC Champions League history.

But it will be no ordinary match for Kate as she will be one of just 14 Sydney fans, and the only female among them, to take her seat in the 65,000 capacity King Fahd Stadium.

Visa red tape and expensive travel costs means that of an expected party of 200 only Durnell and 13 other hardly souls will make the near 16,000 mile round trip from Sydney to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

It's there that Tony Popovic's fledgling side will look to complete a fairytale triumph more in keeping with Hollywood movie script than the football field.

Formed just two years ago, Western Sydney stand just 90 minutes away from becoming the first Australian side to win Asian club football's biggest prize, and in their debut season no less.

To do so though they must venture into the heartland of the ultra-conservative kingdom to face two-time winners Al Hilal - voted Asia's best side of the 20th century.

A hostile reception awaits as Sydney look to protect their one goal advantage after their 1-0 win in last Saturday's first leg, but they insist they won't be intimidated.

And neither will Durnell despite the fact she's venturing into the relatively unknown on her first trip outside of her homeland.

With women rarely attending football matches in Saudi Arabia, the Asian Football Conderation forced Al Hilal to relax the rules for the showpiece, which has allowed Durnell to make the once-in-a-lifetime trip.

“The main reason I wanted to go was just to support the boys,” she told foxsports.com.au. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and to be able to go overseas and experience this with only a few other Wanderers fans, is just something I couldn’t pass up.

“Being the only female supporter going is obviously intimidating, but the excitement outweighs the nerves tenfold, and going with my Dad is obviously a bit more comforting.

“Having only been on my first flight a year ago, my first interstate away game at the start of the year and this being my first trip out of the country, this is definitely going to be an experience. I hope to represent Western Sydney, Australia and all female football fans as best I can.”
